Hormones and hereditary inheritance are the main reasons for hair loss. The main method of hair loss for both women and men are Androgenetic Alopecia (which is someimtes called pattern baldness), is the leading cause for hair loss. Androgenetic Alopecia has distinct characteristics like thinning in the design of a U or horse shoe.

With Androgenetic Alopecia the loss of hair is caused by an excessive hormone known as testosterone, which is a result of an increase in dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is one of the products of testosterone. DHT can cause lack of blood supply to the hair as it damages the vessels that lead to it, and it can progressively cause follicle thinning, which would cause uneven unhealthy short and thin hair growth, until eventually the follicle dies. In addition, the body’s natural immune system identifies the uneven follicle and as part of its defense mechanism focuses on getting rid of the unhealthy follicle.

Another less common cause maybe due to a disorder in the immune system, which leads to Alopecia Areata. This condition can result in patches of hair growth in different parts of the scalp and body. Stress is another leading cause of hair loss, usually it starts with slowing of hair growth and eventually leads to loss of hair. This shedding however maybe due to other factors like child birth to name one, and may be temporary.

Another more obvious cause is a deficiency in nutrition which leads to unhealthy growth and thus hair loss. Other less likely causes are reduced blood circulation to the hair, a bacterial infection on the scalp or a deposit of dirt in the hair root. This maybe caused by a mixture with the natural oils in the scalp otherwise known as sebum that combines with the dirt and results in a hard substance which can block the hair follicle which causes lack of nutrition reaching the hair which in turn results in a dead follicle.

House dust mites can trigger all sorts of health conditions including itchy eyes, breathlessness, coughing and skin rashes. These mites prefer mattresses, soft toys, carpets and bed linen for their ‘home’s. So, how do you get rid of them?

  • Wash rugs regularly and dry them in the sun.
  • Wash bed sheets, cushion covers and pillow cases weekly on hot water, if possible (55°c or higher).
  • Wash soft toys weekly. Heed the washing instruction on the labels so you don’t  spoil the toys.
  • Clean hard surfaces with an electrostatic cloth rather than a feather duster.
