You Double your Risk of Allergy when you Get first Cat for Yourself as an Adult

January 31st, 2012 -- Posted in General, Safety, Tips | No Comments »

There are millions of homes around the country where cat is a pet. After dog perhaps, cat is the most popular animal that is also a pet. In an interesting study that was carried out recently, it was found that adults who get their first cat in their home and also take it to their bedrooms are twice more vulnerable to cat allergy than if they have had cat as a pet in their childhood. This means that adults who had cat as pet in their childhood are less likely to suffer from cat allergens. What is interesting is that adult having their first cat suffered from cat allergy only when they took the pet inside their bedrooms.

None of the participants in the study who kept the cat out of bedroom developed any allergy. In comparison, people who played with a cat as pet had no or very little chance of developing cat allergy when they got a cat again in their adulthood. This certainly does not mean that kids who have had exposure to cats will not have any cat allergy as an adult but it does reduce the chances greatly. Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology carried this study in its December issue.

Smoking during Pregnancy may Cause Damage to Newborn’s Blood Vessels

January 23rd, 2012 -- Posted in Health care, Pregnancy | No Comments »

We all know that smoking is bad for the health of both a woman and her unborn child. If the diseases that the newborn might suffer because of smoking were to be advertised, most women would leave smoking before becoming pregnant. Now there is another reason to leave smoking before trying to be a proud mom. Scientists have concluded that those children who have mothers smoking when they were not yet born suffer from enlarged blood vessels. This conclusion is based upon a survey of more than 250 children at the age of 5. Mothers of these children smoked during pregnancy.

Blood vessels in the neck of these children, called carotid arteries, that carry blood to their brains, were found to be thicker by 19 microns than in kids whose mothers did not smoke during pregnancy. Another shocking feature was that these vessels were also stiffer by 15% than carotid arteries of kids with non smoking mothers. If fathers of these kids were also smokers, the blood vessels were found to be 28 microns thicker and 21% stiffer than vessels of kids with non smoker parents.

This latest finding is surely the most terrifying news about kids being born with damaged blood vessels and enough to convince women to stop smoking at least during pregnancy.

Most Contact Lens Users Do Not Follow Safety Tips

January 17th, 2012 -- Posted in Health care, Safety, Tips | No Comments »

A latest survey describing habits of those who use contact lenses has revealed that though these people say that they know all about safety advices and steps to be taken to prevent wear and tear of their lenses, there are actually very few who follow these recommendations. What is shocking is that more than 80% said that they knew all about care of lenses. However, when these people were examined, it was found that just 2% complied with safety recommendations. Even among these 2% people, only half could be said to be following safety recommendations completely. These were also those who changed their lens solution instead of toping old solution. These people were careful enough to change their lens covers frequently.

Though more than 4/5th of the respondents in the survey said they felt they complied with all safety recommendations, doctors found that only 0.4% of these people actually followed safety advices. These findings were not shocking for those involved with the survey as the most frequent complications that have till date been reported by people wearing contact lenses are infection and discomfort. These are problems reported mostly by those who use disposable lenses meant to be used for 2 weeks only.

Memory Loss in Adults: New Finding

January 12th, 2012 -- Posted in General, Health care | No Comments »

Loss of memory is a common phenomenon and seen mostly with aging adults. It is really debilitating for hapless individuals and hampers with their daily lives. Till now scientists believed memory loss to be a result of damage to hippocampus which is a part of the brain responsible for memory and related functions. Though there is no denying the role of hippocampus and its deterioration leading to memory loss, latest research conducted by Adam Brickman suggests there may be other causes of memory loss too.

This research says that though memory loss takes place because of shrinkage or degeneration of hippocampus, tiny strokes that are also called silent strokes have an active association with lapses in memory.  So far scientists have linked strokes with loss of cognitive abilities that can be described as ability to make linkages in the mind, processing of information etc, but never has there been any attention to loss of memory because of strokes.

The research conducted study on 658 senior people with ages more than 65. They were healthy people with no record of dementia. Later, these people were checked again and 174 people of this group were found to have suffered from tiny, silent strokes that did not necessitate any hospitalization. These were the people who performed badly in memory tests among the lot.
