Peak Bone Mass

Bone mass is basically the amount of tissue that exists in the bone.  This tissue keeps growing until a person is about 30 years old. By about age 30, a person has achieved maximum bone strength and density. This is the level is known as peak bone mass. After this stage, bone mass starts to decrease. Almost 90% of peak bone mass is attained by age 18 in girls and 20 in boys. Good peak bone mass is important to prevent the development of osteoporosis later in life.

Factor that promote peak bone mass.

  • Gender – Peak bone mass is higher in men then women. Up to the point of puberty, bot  boys and girls build bone mass at relatively similar rate. However, males gain more bone mass after puberty.
  • Nutrition – Consumer more bone friendly nutrients like calsium and Vitamin D.
  • Physical Activity – Those who exercise regularly, especially weight-bearing activities, will attain greater peak bone mass than those who lead a more sedentary lifestyle.
  • Smoking and Alcohol Consumption – These habits adversely affect peak bone mass, particularly among adolescents.
  • Oestrogen Hormone – Higher bone mineral density has been note in women with early menarche (first menstrual period at an early age) and those on oral contraceptives. The drop in estrogen levels in post-menopausal women is a common cause of osteoporosis.

  • Appreciate. Be thankful for the good thing you have and pay attention to the positives in life rather then dwelling on the negatives.
  • Relax. Take time to enjoy life. Watch a feel-good movie, read a great book or simply take leisurely stroll.
  • Get creative!. Take up a new hobby that appeals to your creative side. Be it writing, learning a musical instrument, drawing, knitting or gardening, do something thats make you feel good about your self.
